What you get

The full name is a mouthful: Canad Inns Destination Centre Club Regent Casino Hotel. It stands beside Club Regent Casino, one of the two Casinos of Winnipeg run by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries. Six floors, 146 rooms, no smoking anywhere; an AAA inspector filed them under "modest", and that's about right. Choose One King, One Queen or Two Queen, or the One-Bedroom King Suite.

Casino and event centre

Expect roughly 1,200 slots, progressives and electronic table games included, along with bingo; live tables open daily at 5:30 pm and close at 3 am. Manitoba's age limit is 18. Concerts and comedy fill the 1,300 seats of the Club Regent Event Centre, opened in 2014. In the hotel itself, VLTs are available at Playmaker's Gaming Lounge between 9 am and midnight.

Food

At Aaltos you'll find themed buffet dinners on Thursday through Sunday from 5 pm until 8 pm (turkey, roast beef, surf and turf, chicken and ribs) and a Sunday brunch between 10 am and 2 pm. Toukies serves as the casino's lounge. There's also a McDonald's and an ice-cream counter.

Details

Parking costs nothing in the casino's parkade. The airport lies roughly 15 km off, a 25-minute drive. AAA's listing gives a 4 pm check-in and 11 am check-out and notes that pets aren't accepted. When you book, mention the Stay & Play rate: each Club Card member gets $15 in free play with it.

Our take

Good for a show at the event centre or an evening of gaming in Winnipeg, but don't expect a resort; that's what keeps it just out of our top ten.
